Reclassification
Thursday, 29 October 2009 00:00

Reclassification involves changing your Hockey Canada Level (1-6) and does not involve changing the level of hockey being worked by an official. Reclassification of an official can come about in one of three different ways:

1. The official requesting Reclassification in writing to the Director of Reclassification by December 31 of each year. A resume of experience and levels of hockey as well as current supervisions should be included with the letter.

2. By a recommendation from the official's Squad Leader in writing.

3. The Reclassification Committee reviewing the name list each year and selecting potential candidates for upgrading.

The following are some general guidelines used for reclassification throughout Hockey Alberta's various officiating zones:

Level II - 16 years of age by December 31 of the current year in which the official is registering.

Level III -
Written request to the Director of Reclassification by December 31 of the current year.  The request will be considered and judged based on on ice performance as well as contribution to the Zone through off-ice activities.  Those officials refereeing all levels of Midget hockey may be considered for Level III.  The requesting official must also successfully complete the written exam at the start of every season (80%.)

Level IV
- Successful completion of one year of refereeing at the Midget AAA level, along with off-ice contributions to the Zone.  The requesting official must also attend a Level IV - V camp at the beginning of the following season, successfully complete the physical requirements, as well as pass the Level IV State Referee's Decision (SRD) exam (80%).

Level V
- Successful completion of one year of refereeing at the AJHL level, along with off-ice contributions to the Zone.  The candidate must also attend a Level IV - V camp at the beginning of the following season, successfully complete the physical requirements, as well as pass the Level V State Referee's Decision (SRD) exam (90%).  The candidate will also be supervised by Hockey Alberta Referees Council representatives during that season.

Level VI
- Also a provincial determination.  The candidate must attend a one-week CHA Level VI camp, meet all physical requirements, successfully complete the Level VI State Referee's Decision exam (90%), and be supervised by Hockey Canada representatives during that season.

At the end of each season, the Reclassification Committee will make its recommendations regarding reclassification to the Zone Executive. At that time, the Executive will classify officials from Level I to IV (reclassifying officials is done at this time). Also at that time, the Executive will make recommendations to the Provincial Executive for Levels V and VI.
