Do Not Comment On Suspensions PDF Print

Another reminder: Do not comment on suspensions.

As Referees, we don't care about suspensions. Once a rule in the rulebook is assessed (and written up), our job is done.

Suspensions are up to the league, as they are supplemental discipline that players would receive for breaking a rule in the rulebook. Each league does their own thing, and we don't need to know or care about what an individual league is going to do. They might read a write-up and decide not to give any suspension. They might read a write-up and decide to triple the suspension. They might not even read the write-up and triple their 'minimum' suspension. It's up to them. Leave it on their shoulders.

Why do we not comment on suspensions?

In at least one instance this year, a coach has been told by a referee that a penalized player would not receive a suspension for the offense. Based on this, the coach dressed the player for the next game.

Unfortunately for the coach, a suspension had been given to the player. Since the coach had allowed a suspended player to play in a game, he was now in deep trouble. Dressing an ineligible player is one of the worst things that a coach can do, and results in an indefinite suspension for the coach.

Should the coach have checked with the league about a suspension? Definitely. Instead, the coach decided to take the referee at his word that no suspension would be handed out. Had the referee not commented, the coach would now not be in serious hot water.

What should we do when asked about suspensions?

If somebody asks you if there will be a suspension, shrug your shoulders and say it's up to the league. It's the truth.

Legal Cat's Eye Goalie Masks PDF Print

Ladies & Gentlemen,
It has come to my attention that some of you have concerns over whether goalies are wearing certified goalie masks (Ie. CSA Approved helmet as well as the cage). Your biggest concern is the wearing of a cage that has "cats eyes".  While the original cats eye masks are illegal in amateur hockey (they were never CSA approved), there are now a couple out there that have CSA approval. One is the Itech RP624. The newer cats eye masks that are certified have an extra bar across the top of the eye holes. I would suggest you google the above mask so you can see what it looks like. In all cases, the cage needs to have a CSA sticker. I am told the location on the above mentioned cage is behind the "Itech" logo which would be inside the cage.

Quick reminder for all CZRC officials (those in Calgary and outside):

When signing the game sheet at the end of the game, please print your Name and Referee Number in a legible manner. An actual signature is optional and not required.

If you notice that someone you're working with is not printing their name and number, please share this information with them. Again, this applies to all officials in all areas at all levels.

Thanks in advance!
